All safety footwear placed on the market must comply with EN ISO 20345:2011 (at the time of writing) with a new standard now available, EN ISO 20345:2022 which aims to bring the standard in line with the features now available.

Your Safety Footwear goes through lots of additional testing versus your standard footwear. Alongside the protective toecap impact and compression tests, and midsole penetration tests (where marked). Some of the most important indicators are its performance against electrostatic, water resistance, shock absorbing and slip resistance.

1 – Fit

We actively encourage you to ‘put your foot in it’, regards of your foot size and shape the best way to ensure suitability of fit is to try your selected footwear on.

You’ll find lots of guidance online from many manufacturers about wider fits, standard fits and womens fit but there is no replacement for doing what you did as a child, trying on your expected size(s) and walking around prior to confirming your selection.

Remember to tie your laces and take your time rather than assuming.

2 – Functionality

In recent years, non-metallic components have emerged as the best option for protective toecaps and midsoles. But alongside this look for:

  • Scuff caps that cover the front of the footwear, these can be integrated to the outsole or as a separate piece and depending on style can be made of various rigid or painted polymers or abrasion resistant fabrics.
  • An outsole that is suitable for your environment for outdoor work look for open cleated soles to ensure a firm grip on uneven ground, don’t forget if you’re climbing stairs or ladders to choose a product with a ladder grip cut out tread.
  • On the inside of the boot check the insole to make sure it offers good cushioning to your foot. Materials like PU offer a shape retaining base similar to anti-fatigue matting.
